Walking in & around Blanchland

Voted home to Britain’s Wildest Routes (The Times, 2010)

Picturesque Blanchland lies sheltered among the rolling folds of the North Pennines. Surrounded by miles of exposed heather moorland, home to black grouse, curlew and lapwing the trodden paths tell the timeless tales of the history that encompasses the wild and rich landscape.

With an abundance of walks leaving direct from the hotel walking in Blanchland
and the surrounding countryside is rewarding activity at any time of year.

There are a number of local walk leaflets courtesy of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including a 20km long route designed for horse-riders and cyclists alike, based on the 18th Century packhorse trails which were once used to transport lead and other goods to far-off towns.

Blanchland is one of the prettiest estate villages in Co Durham and the Lord Crewe Arms is one of the most haunted buildings. Village and hotel sit under the high, bare West Durham moors " ~ more...

One reader posted this reply, " Blanchland is utterly gorgeous and The Lord Crewe has a fabulous atmosphere. It's a very natural, down to earth place to walk/eat/drink." We find it very hard to disagree!
